The Department of Surgical Oncology was established in April 2021 at Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical and Health Sciences and Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Dehradun.
It currently includes three faculty members, one senior resident, and three junior residents.

- Providing high-quality treatment to cancer patients at par with the international standards
- Collaboration with Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Radiology, Pathology, Nuclear Medicine, Psychiatry, Yoga, and other relevant specialties to provide multidisciplinary care to the cancer patients
- Undertaking extra-mural and intramural funded research projects in the field of cancer
- Collaboration with National and International Institutions of excellence to promote training and research in the field of cancer

OUTPATIENTS’ DEPARTMENT:
- General OPD: The OPD is located in Level 6, North Block, Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Dehradun A Block. The department runs OPDs six days a week (Monday to Saturday):
IN-PATIENTS DEPARTMENT
The Surgical Oncology Ward consists of 26 beds and is located in Level 6, North Block, Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Dehradun. The ward includes a post-operative HDU which is well equipped with state of art patient care monitors and ventilators and Minor OT/Dressing OT manned by dedicated nursing officers.
- Procedures (Diagnostic and/or Therapeutic) offered by the department:
- All the surgical procedures related to cancers occurring in various organs – Head and Neck cancers, Breast cancer, Thoracic Oncology, Gastrointestinal cancers, Hepatobiliary-pancreatic biliary cancers, Gynecological cancers, Urogenital cancers, Soft Tissue Sarcomas
- Systemic chemotherapy, immunotherapy for solid tumors.
- Preventive cancer surgery - Mastectomy, thyroidectomy, colectomy
- Supportive surgeries - Chemo-port insertion, emergency tracheostomy, colostomy, ileostomy
SPECIALIZED SERVICES AVAILABLE
We have specialized services available for specific disease management including:
- Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC)
- Minimally invasive cancer surgeries (laparoscopic, thoracoscopic, and endoscopic)
- Breast reconstruction (oncoplasty, free flaps, implant-based reconstruction)
- Endoscopic procedures (Upper GI endoscopy, Colonoscopy, Bronchoscopy, Thoracoscopy, laryngoscopy)
- Lung Cancer surgeries
- Patient education programs for stoma care (Colostomy, ileostomy, urostomy, tracheostomy) by trained stoma staff.
- Dietary management and Physiotherapy for pre-habilitation and rehabilitation of patients before and after major cancer surgeries.
- Pain and palliative care
